We're highlighting some of the Sodexo Sponsored Elite Athletes here at Solent University, first up is John Coyle. John, a regular customer at the Natural bar, has been participating in the 100m and 200m sprint for 4 years now. He was recently informed that he was successful in being accepted on to the PGCE in Primary Teaching at the University of Durham.

John started out his foundation level degree at Solent and shows full commitment to both his studies and his training. Last year John qualified for the European Team Championships and is looking to qualify for the European Athletics Championships in the future. The European Individual time is 10.6 seconds, but he is looking to achieve 10.4 seconds as this would be medal contention. John is currently preparing for the BUCS Indoor Athletics Championship.

Sam Bass-Cooper - Pole Vaulter
Sam has been vaulting for 6 years now competing for Southampton, Hampshire and Hampshire schools. He has been the Hampshire Champion on four occasions and an under 15 and under 17 Inter Counties champion too. Last season, he won the South of England Indoor Championships and perhaps the biggest achievement was winning the CAU Senior Inter Counties title.

With a personal best of 4.70m he hopes to improve to over 5m and in the future aspire to go on and represent Great Britain at International events.

Lia Stephenson - Triple Jump
Lia's passion for Triple Jump began when she started Athletics competing in Discus at the age of 13. She was awarded Gold in the South of England Championships and will be competing in the British Championships. With a current personal best of 12 meters 71, Lia is aiming towards the Olympics but has to achieve 13 meters 20 in Triple Jump to get into the European Juniors first. Outside of training 4-5 times a week she studies HEPA at Southampton Solent University.

Sam Batten - Sailing

Ana is an international sailor and Olympic hopeful in the Radial Laser Class. Over the last few weeks Ana has shown clear dedication to both her sport and academic studies. She is a regular in the gym at 7am and has attended every event and workshop we have run this year.

Ana, whom is from Serbia started sailing at the age of fourteen when she would visit coastal locations. Serbias is landlocked so the opportunity to take up sailing was limited. At the age of sixteen she started racing and was third in the Serbian Nationals. Just recently, she came second in the GB National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships. Her main focus right now is on the Olympic Games in Rio.

(Laura at the 2010 Commonwealth Games)
Laura Edwards - Artistic Gymnastics
Six hours training a day led to GB Gymnast Laura Edwards winning silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, an amazing achievement for this 2nd Solent student.

Laura is currently in rehab for a torn ACL which she suffered during an event in March but prior to this she was at the World Championships in Japan as well as competing in a host of British Internationals and of course the Commonwealth Games. Laura is currently studying Sports Science and aspires to become a Strength & Conditioning Coach at the English Institute of Sport.

Matt Reid - Laser Sailing
