We're highlighting some of the Sodexo Sponsored Elite Athletes here at Solent University, first up is John Coyle. John, a regular customer at the Natural bar, has been participating in the 100m and 200m sprint for 4 years now. He was recently informed that he was successful in being accepted on to the PGCE in Primary Teaching at the University of Durham.
John started out his foundation level degree at Solent and shows full commitment to both his studies and his training. Last year John qualified for the European Team Championships and is looking to qualify for the European Athletics Championships in the future. The European Individual time is 10.6 seconds, but he is looking to achieve 10.4 seconds as this would be medal contention. John is currently preparing for the BUCS Indoor Athletics Championship.
Sam Bass-Cooper - Pole Vaulter
Sam has been vaulting for 6 years now competing for Southampton, Hampshire and Hampshire schools. He has been the Hampshire Champion on four occasions and an under 15 and under 17 Inter Counties champion too. Last season, he won the South of England Indoor Championships and perhaps the biggest achievement was winning the CAU Senior Inter Counties title.
With a personal best of 4.70m he hopes to improve to over 5m and in the future aspire to go on and represent Great Britain at International events.
Lia Stephenson - Triple Jump
Lia's passion for Triple Jump began when she started Athletics competing in Discus at the age of 13. She was awarded Gold in the South of England Championships and will be competing in the British Championships. With a current personal best of 12 meters 71, Lia is aiming towards the Olympics but has to achieve 13 meters 20 in Triple Jump to get into the European Juniors first. Outside of training 4-5 times a week she studies HEPA at Southampton Solent University.
Sam Batten - Sailing
Starting off life at a small sailing club in Middleton, Sam is now part of the GB Sailing Squad. He competed over Christmas in an international sailing regatta and came 8th. He also competed in the Santander Sailing Competition, that takes place every four years and came 18th. Sam also takes Power Craft design at Uni.
Ana is an international sailor and Olympic hopeful in the Radial Laser Class. Over the last few weeks Ana has shown clear dedication to both her sport and academic studies. She is a regular in the gym at 7am and has attended every event and workshop we have run this year.
Ana, whom is from Serbia started sailing at the age of fourteen when she would visit coastal locations. Serbias is landlocked so the opportunity to take up sailing was limited. At the age of sixteen she started racing and was third in the Serbian Nationals. Just recently, she came second in the GB National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships. Her main focus right now is on the Olympic Games in Rio.
Matt Reid has aspirations to win a gold medal and to represent his country at the highest level. Matt was part of the GB Sailing Podium Potential squad for two years and in this period he competed at several international competitions including the Worlds and European events. He recently gained a bronze medal at the British University Fleet racing event. This was the first university medal for Solent this year.
